Module 6 · Lesson 14 of 26

Mobile autoconfig and app passwords

Part of Mailcow: Self-Hosted Mail Server Mastery — SOGo, ActiveSync & Mobile Clients.

Autodiscover/Autoconfig: add CNAME records pointing autodiscover.example.com and autoconfig.example.com at MAILCOW_HOSTNAME. Mailcow ships XML responses for both Apple, Thunderbird, and Outlook clients — users only type their email and password.

App passwords: when 2FA is on (TOTP), users need a per-device app password for IMAP/SMTP clients. Generate in SOGo → Preferences → Mail or via Mailcow UI → Mailbox details. Store the app password in the device keychain — it can't be recovered.

iOS quirks:

  • iOS Mail will sometimes pick POP over IMAP from autodiscover — force IMAP manually if you see it.
  • "Mail Days to Sync" defaults to No Limit and will pull GBs on first sync. Set to 1 month for fresh devices.

Android quirks:

  • Gmail app does not honor autoconfig. Users must add via "Other (IMAP)" manually.
  • K-9 Mail / FairEmail work flawlessly.
