Gmail
Google's email service, for personal accounts and for businesses through Google Workspace. Its sender guidelines and Postmaster Tools set much of the industry's practice.
What it means
Gmail filters mail for personal accounts (gmail.com) and for Google Workspace organisations. Google's email sender guidelines apply to mail sent to personal Gmail accounts: requirements for all senders and stricter ones for bulk senders, those sending close to 5,000 or more messages a day. Postmaster Tools reports spam rate, reputation and compliance for mail to personal accounts.
Gmail sorts the inbox into tabs, files unwanted mail in Spam, and learns from users' Report spam and Not spam actions. Its SMTP replies carry enhanced status codes with an explanation, such as 4.7.28 for an unusual rate of unsolicited mail or 5.7.26 for authentication failures; the error code pages list them.
As senders, personal Gmail accounts can reach a limit above 500 recipients in one email or 500 emails in a day.
