Invalid recipient

What it means

Code 416 means the user does not exist at Orange, so the address is not a valid Orange or Wanadoo mailbox. Orange mentions it twice on its postmaster page, in the guidelines for all senders and again for large senders, each time with the same instruction: keep your distribution list up to date and remove the address. Sending to it again will not help while the address does not exist. For large senders, Orange also asks that bounces be managed and that lists are never bought.

Common causes

  • A typo in the address.
  • The mailbox was closed, for example when the customer left Orange.
  • The address was never valid, or came from an unverified or bought list.

How to fix it

  1. 01Check the spelling of the address.
  2. 02Remove the address from your distribution list.
  3. 03Verify new addresses with a confirmation email (opt-in) before sending to them.
