Sending volume

How much mail a sender sends, per day and per provider. Providers judge changes in volume as much as the level, so steady growth matters.

What it means

Google's guidelines tie volume to reputation: the more you send, the more slowly you should increase it, and you can increase faster when you send daily rather than weekly. It recommends a consistent rate without bursts, and gives an example of what goes wrong: immediately doubling previously sent volumes can lead to rate limiting or reputation drops. A change in message format or sending infrastructure should be ramped up separately.

M3AAWG notes that IP reputation is sensitive to changes in volume, and its practices for ESPs flag a customer sending more than 40% above its usual volume as abnormal.

Volume also sets which rules apply: Google's and Microsoft's bulk requirements start at 5,000 messages a day to their users.
