Follow-up email

A later message in a sequence sent to someone who has not replied to an earlier one, usually as a reply in the same thread.

What it means

Follow-ups are the steps after the first in an email sequence. HubSpot's sequences let each later step wait a chosen number of business days and stop for contacts who reply or book a meeting.

Every follow-up is another unsolicited message to the same person, so it carries the same risks as the first and adds to the volume from each sending mailbox. M3AAWG notes that unexpected increases in the frequency of messages often lead to more abuse complaints.

Stop the sequence when a recipient replies, unsubscribes or bounces, and keep the number of steps proportionate.
