What the server says
451 Unable to process connection at this time.

What it means

Mimecast sends this reply when the server handling the connection is under maximum load. It says nothing about your message, your IP or your domain, and Mimecast says no action is required from the end user: once capacity frees up, the message is processed on a later attempt. Because the code starts with 4, a correctly configured server keeps the message in its queue and tries again on its own. It only turns into a lost message if the sending software gives up on temporary failures or its retry window is very short.

Common causes

  • A short spike in load on the Mimecast servers that handle the recipient’s mail.
  • Your server reached Mimecast during a busy period and was asked to come back later.

How to fix it

  1. 01Do nothing manually; let your server retry the queued message.
  2. 02Make sure your sending platform retries 4xx replies for at least several hours instead of marking them as failed.
  3. 03If the same reply continues for many hours, tell the recipient so their administrator can raise it with Mimecast support.

  2. 451Greylisting or a reputation check delayed the message.Mimecast is holding off a first contact from your server through greylisting, or because your IP’s reputation is poor. A well-behaved server retries and usually gets through.MimecastTemporary
