451: temporary reject for misuse or guideline violations

GMX deferred your mail with a 451 because of an exceptional blocklist or a breach of its sending guidelines. The message is retried, but the cause has to be removed first.

What it means

These cases are temporary rejections that GMX issues to keep its infrastructure safe. Cases r0004 and r0007 point to the blocklists it uses in exceptional situations, against connections or individual messages. Case r0011 covers connections refused for a while because they broke GMX guidelines, and it refers senders to the GMX requirements and recommendations. In every case the reply starts with 451, so your server holds the message and tries again. GMX does not name a single trigger: it asks you to stop any misuse of your system, check its requirements, and contact it with the full error text if the situation does not improve.

Common causes

  • Mail or connections from your system looked like misuse to GMX.
  • Your setup misses one of the GMX requirements, such as a static IP, individual reverse DNS or a valid HELO name.
  • Spam is leaving your system through a compromised account or an open relay.

How to fix it

  1. 01Look for unwanted outbound mail and stop it at the source.
  2. 02Compare your setup with the GMX requirements page: static IP, individual reverse DNS, valid HELO, RFC-compliant headers and an aligned DKIM signature.
  3. 03Let the queued messages retry by themselves.
  4. 04If the deferrals continue, contact GMX through the form on the case page with the complete error message in text form.
