What the server says
550 5.7.13 STOREDRV.AuthenticationRequiredForPublicFolder

What it means

When a message arrives at a mail-enabled public folder, Exchange Online writes it under a folder permission: Default for internal users sending from a shared mailbox with Send As or Send on Behalf rights, and Anonymous for external senders. If that permission cannot create items, the message bounces with 550 5.7.13 STOREDRV.AuthenticationRequiredForPublicFolder. The folder admin fixes it by granting CreateItems to the right permission. Microsoft also groups 5.7.13 with 5.7.135 for folders that reject outside senders.

Common causes

  • The Anonymous permission on the folder cannot create items, so external mail fails.
  • Internal users sending from a shared mailbox fall under the Default permission, which also cannot create items.

How to fix it

  1. 01Ask the folder's organization admin to grant the permission.
  2. 02Admins: check the folder permissions with Get-PublicFolderClientPermission.
  3. 03Grant CreateItems to Default for internal senders, or to Anonymous for external senders, with Add-PublicFolderClientPermission.
