450: deferred for a changing HELO or unknown addresses

IONOS delayed your mail because your server keeps changing its HELO/EHLO name, or because it sent too much to addresses that do not exist.

450 Rejected due to policy violations

What it means

IONOS gives two reasons for this 450. The first is a HELO/EHLO name that keeps changing from one SMTP session to the next. A real mail server announces itself the same way every time, so IONOS reads changing names as a sign of an infected system being misused to send spam, and advises a virus scan. The second is the one behind its 421 of the same wording: too much mail to non-existent addresses, which gets the IP blocked for mail to IONOS customers. The reply is temporary, so deliveries resume once the cause is gone.

Common causes

  • Your server, or several servers behind one IP, announce different HELO names.
  • Malware on a machine in your network sends mail with changing names.
  • Your list sends to many IONOS addresses that do not exist.

How to fix it

  1. 01Set a single fixed, fully qualified HELO name for each sending IP.
  2. 02Scan the sending systems for malware and clean them.
  3. 03Remove inactive and outdated addresses from your list.
  4. 04Restart sending later.
