ICO
The UK's Information Commissioner's Office, the regulator for UK GDPR and for PECR, which governs marketing email in the UK.
What it means
The ICO enforces the UK's data protection law and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. Its guide to PECR explains the email marketing rules: specific consent for individuals, the soft opt-in for existing customers, and marketing to corporate subscribers allowed with good practice of keeping a do-not-email list.
Its UK GDPR guidance covers the lawful bases, including the three-part test for legitimate interests, and the absolute right to object to direct marketing.
The ICO notes that some of its guidance is under review after changes made by the Data (Use and Access) Act, so check the current version of a page before relying on it.
