Email appending
Matching existing customer records against a third-party database to add email addresses the customers never gave you. M3AAWG calls it abusive.
What it means
M3AAWG describes email appending, also called e-pending, as data matching in which a sender tries to match a customer record with an email address, although the owner of the address has neither provided it nor consented to receive messages from that sender at it. M3AAWG calls the practice a direct violation of its core values, says it leads to many spam complaints and rejections, and notes significant risks under privacy and anti-spam laws.
Apple lists email appends with purchased and rented lists as sources it does not accept for bulk mail to iCloud users, and M3AAWG names e-pended lists among the ways spam traps reach a list.
Like a purchased address, an appended address needs consent of its own before it is mailed.
