What the server says
550 5.7.0 The sending email account has been temporarily suspended due to abuse.

What it means

Google's SMTP relay spam policy lets it stop relay mail from accounts that send spam or otherwise abuse the service. The account sending through smtp-relay.gmail.com has been temporarily suspended under that policy, so its relayed mail is refused. Google links this reply to its SMTP relay spam policy. A compromised device or account, or a legitimate system that sent unwanted bulk mail, is the usual cause. Clean that up before the suspension ends, or it is likely to happen again.

Common causes

  • A compromised user account, device or application sending spam through the relay.
  • Bulk or unsolicited mail sent through the relay against Google's policy.

How to fix it

  1. 01Find what sent the mail, using Email Log Search and your relay logs.
  2. 02Secure compromised accounts or devices: reset passwords, revoke app access and remove malware.
  3. 03Move legitimate bulk mail to a dedicated sending service.
  4. 04Read Google's SMTP relay spam policy, and contact Google Workspace support if you need the suspension reviewed.
