5.3.0: receiving system problem, unspecified

The receiving server normally accepts mail, but a problem on that system itself, rather than with the mailbox or the message, stopped this delivery.

What it means

X.3.x codes point at the destination mail system, which RFC 3463 places under the control of its administrator. Detail 0 means the server reports a system-side issue without classifying it. The registry lists it with reply codes from 221 to 554, so it turns up in very different situations, from a server shutting down to a final refusal. 5.3.0 means the message was returned; 4.3.0 means a temporary condition, and the sending server retries. As the sender you usually cannot fix it yourself; the text after the code tells you whether to wait or to contact the recipient's administrator.

Common causes

  • A software or configuration error on the receiving server.
  • A server being restarted, upgraded or overloaded.
  • A local rule on the receiving system that has no specific code.

How to fix it

  1. 01Read the text after the code for the server's own explanation.
  2. 02For 4.3.0, let the sending server retry.
  3. 03If 5.3.0 repeats, send the full bounce to the recipient's postmaster address.
  4. 04Check that the same message reaches other domains; if it does, the problem sits on the receiving side.
